There are four more essential ingredients to add to our love potion: protection, trust, hope, and perseverance.

Every marriage needs protection. As a husband and father, it is built in me to protect my family from both known and unknown enemies. I want them to feel safe with me. I want them to know that I will do everything I can to protect them.

A marriage without trust is on its way to divorce court. If you have trust in your marriage, cherish it. Hold it dear and never betray it. If it has been broken, fix it. Start today.

Hope gives us a reason to keep going, to continue working on our marriages. Wherever your marriage is today, there is hope. It can be better. It can get better. We follow a God who can heal and is about miracles. Our marriages can continue and grow in the hope of what God will do tomorrow.

When I said my vows to Nancy, I pledged myself to her for as long as I would live. Making it from the altar to the grave takes work—a lot of it. Work is the essence of perseverance. For those of us who work hard in our marriages, there is no more rewarding relationship (other than our relationship with Christ) than the marriage relationship.
