Preplanned Date Night: The “Story of Us” Journey

📖 Verse for the Night: “The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.” – Psalm 126:3

Step 1: Setting the Atmosphere

Before the date starts, create a timeline wall together. Grab sticky notes, index cards, or a roll of butcher paper.

  1. Write down 5-10 key moments from your relationship (first date, engagement, wedding, first home, tough seasons overcome, children, spiritual breakthroughs, etc.).

  2. Stick them on the wall in chronological order.

  3. Play a love song that holds special meaning for your relationship while doing this.

🔹 Pro tip: Light a candle, pour your favorite warm drink (coffee, tea, or hot chocolate), and make this a cozy, intimate setting.

Activity 1: Dinner + Reflection

Instead of going to a restaurant, make a “First Year of Marriage” Inspired Meal together.

  • If you cooked together often in your first year, remake a favorite recipe from that season.

  • If you had a go-to takeout place, order from there.

  • If life was too crazy back then to cook, try a brand-new recipe together to symbolize a fresh start.

Table Talk Questions:

  • What’s one way you’ve seen each other grow spiritually over the years?

  • What season of marriage felt like the biggest challenge, and how did God show up?

  • What’s a prayer God has answered in our marriage that we might have forgotten to celebrate?

  • What’s a quality in me that you’ve seen God refine over the years?

  • If we could go back and encourage our newlywed selves, what would we say?

  • How has God surprised us in our marriage?

  • What’s a specific way you’ve seen God use our marriage to impact others?

  • What’s one habit or rhythm we’ve built that has strengthened our relationship with God?

  • When did we most tangibly feel God’s provision in our marriage?

  • How do you think God is preparing us for the next season of our marriage?

  • What’s an area where we need to trust God more right now?

  • What’s something about our love story that you never want to take for granted?

  • If we could choose a “theme verse” for our marriage right now, what would it be and why?

(Pause to pray together, thanking God for His faithfulness.)

Activity 2: The Love Story Soundtrack 🎶

Activity: Create a personalized playlist that tells the story of your love—from your early dating days to where you are now!

How to Do It:

  1. Pick 5-7 songs that represent different milestones in your relationship:

    • The song that reminds you of your first date

    • A song from your wedding or first dance

    • A song that got you through a tough season

    • A worship song that strengthened your faith together

    • A song that makes you laugh or dance together

    • A song that represents your marriage today

  2. Share why each song is meaningful. Take turns explaining what each song represents in your love story.

  3. End the night with a slow dance to one of the songs or a karaoke session for some laughs!

📌 Optional Add-On: If you want to make it extra special, burn the playlist onto a CD or create a shared Spotify playlist titled “The Story of Us” and listen to it on future date nights or road trips

Activity 3: "Where We Are Now" Connection Challenge

Sit together and answer:

  • 👉🏼 What’s one thing you feel like we do well as a couple?

  • 👉🏼 What’s one area we could improve?

  • 👉🏼 What’s something we need to surrender to God in our marriage right now?

💡 Pro tip: Hold hands while you answer these! Physical touch fosters connection.

Activity 4: Dreaming Forward

Time to dream about the future! Grab a blank sheet of paper and…

  1. Write down 5 things you hope to do together in the next 5 years.

  2. Pick 1 action step you can take THIS month toward one of those dreams.

  3. Pray over your future together.

(Optional: Seal your dreams in an envelope and open it in a year!)

Activity 5: "Final Words" Love Note

To close the night, each spouse writes a short love note to the other, focusing on:

  • What you admire most about them right now

  • A prayer or blessing for them

  • One thing you are excited for in the future

Trade notes and read them before heading to bed. ❤️

Bonus Add-On: “Our Story in Pictures” Digital Album

The next morning, text each other a favorite photo from your relationship and say one thing about that season you’re grateful for.
