Date Night Idea: Be a Student of Your Spouse

Dr. Kim always encourages us to be a student of our spouse. Marriage is about dying to self and being unselfish. It’s about putting God as number one and our spouse number two day after day. It’s being a student of our spouse and striving to make an “A” each day.

Here are a few compelling reasons I believe that studying your spouse is a valuable ongoing pursuit:

  • Better Communication: By searching deeper into your spouse’s thoughts, feelings, and communication style, you can improve the way you interact. This can lead to more meaningful conversations, fewer misunderstandings, and a greater sense of being heard and understood.

  • Empathy and Connection: Studying your spouse fosters empathy. It allows you to see the world from their perspective, which can lead to increased compassion and a stronger emotional connection.

  • Growth: By studying each other, you are aware of the changes your spouse goes through. For example, when you were first married your wife did not enjoy getting flowers as a gift from you, but now 10 years later it is one of her favorite things to receive. This can help you surprise each other with thoughtful gestures and deepen your romantic connection.

With that in mind, be a student of your spouse for date night tonight. Set up is simple. Just print out the sheets below, grab your spouse, and get started!

Print out two Study Your Spouse Cheat Sheets. Each of you fill them out on your own. After you fill them out, ask each other the questions to see if they know the answers. When you are finished, exchange your sheet with your spouse as a cheat sheet for the future.

Next, it’s homework time! Print out a copy of the homework pages. This part of the date is to help you feel more connected to your spouse.
