Making time for your marriage when life gets busy

"We never seem to have time for each other anymore. How do we reconnect when life is so busy?”

This is the story of so many marriages, especially once kids come along or careers get demanding. You're both exhausted, running from one obligation to the next, and when you finally collapse at the end of the day, there's nothing left for each other. You're living parallel lives under the same roof, and the connection that used to come naturally now feels impossible to find.

Here's the hard truth: you will never "find" time for your marriage. You have to make time for it, and that means something else has to give. Look at your calendar and your commitments honestly. What's taking up all your time? Are all of those things actually necessary, or have you just been saying yes to everything because you haven't prioritized your marriage?

Your marriage is not something that can thrive on leftovers. You can't give it whatever energy remains after you've poured yourself out for work, kids, church, hobbies, friends, and everything else. Your marriage needs to be a priority that you protect, which means you schedule time for it just like you schedule everything else that matters to you.

Start small if you need to. Maybe it's fifteen minutes of uninterrupted conversation every evening after the kids are in bed. Maybe it's a weekly date night, even if it's just after the kids are asleep and you're eating ice cream on the couch together. Maybe it's getting up thirty minutes earlier to have coffee together before the chaos of the day begins. The point is to create consistent, protected time where you're focusing on each other.

Put your phones away during your time together. I'm serious about this. You cannot connect deeply with your spouse while scrolling Instagram or checking work emails. Your time together needs to be about actually being present with each other, not just being in the same room while you're mentally somewhere else.

Practical Steps:

  • Audit your schedule and identify what's stealing time from your marriage

  • Eliminate or reduce commitments that aren't essential or life giving

  • Schedule protected time for your marriage and guard it as fiercely as you guard other commitments

  • Start small with daily connection time if weekly dates feel impossible right now

  • Put phones and other distractions away during your time together

  • Make your marriage a non negotiable priority, not something that gets your leftovers

Key Takeaways:

  • You will never find time for your marriage you have to make time for it

  • Your marriage cannot thrive on leftover energy and attention

  • Something else will have to give to make space for connection

  • Small, consistent connection is better than waiting for perfect circumstances

  • Presence matters more than the activity you're doing together

  • Protecting your marriage time requires saying no to other things
