Insights from Dr. Kim: What’s Your Word?

For the past few years, I have picked a word of the year for myself. It sets the theme of my life for the new year. Last year’s word was “grow.” I wanted to grow in my relationship with God, my family, and friends. I wanted to grow as a person and be better at the end of the year than I was at the beginning. With God’s help, I did grow. Letting go and trusting Him more was a growth step for me. Choosing my battles better as a husband has been a point of growth for me this year. Reading 45 books in 2019 helped me grow and become a better leader. Finally, God has really grown me in focusing on the important things and letting go of things that are not and things I have absolutely no influence or control over.

Two weeks into 2020, I am excited to see all God does with my word for this year: Embrace. I want to take time to embrace everything and everyone that God puts in front of me every day.  That includes my relationship with Him and my relationship with Nancy. It includes family, friends, and those I work with. For me, it also means embracing moments each day - especially the interruptions that usually frustrate me.

Once I have my “word” for the year, these are my next steps. I write it down where I will see it every day. Last year I began using a Bullet Journal* and really liked it. My “word” for the year was a part of that and will be again this year. Each day in my morning quiet time, I say an affirmation using my word. This year’s will look like this:

  • Embrace: Embrace my relationship with God each day in order to build my faith, draw me closer to Him, and to serve Him well. Embrace my relationship with Nancy, family, and others.

  • One Thought: As I embrace God, I am  closer to Him. As I embrace Nancy and others, I am closer to them.

  • One Statement: Embrace means that I will focus on Him and things of Him and experience Him each day. That will deepen my other relationships too.

  • What Do I want Most This Year? To embrace God and all He has for me each day.

  • My One Discipline: What do I need to do today to have what I want most? Embrace my relationship with God. Embrace my relationship with Nancy and others. Embrace the moments.

What about you? Will you pick a word for 2020? What word comes to your mind? Pray and ask God to give you your word and then focus on that word every day this year. You will be amazed where you are on January 1, 2021!
