Insights from Dr. Kim: How Do I Serve?
The Bible challenges me. There are things in the Bible that I wish were not there because trying to do them really stretches me. Oh, I get that they are there for a purpose and my life is better when I follow the counsel of Scripture. But sometimes it is hard.
In Mark 10:43-45, Jesus says, “But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be the slave of everyone else. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
This is really tough for me because this is what I hear Jesus saying:
You need to be different from others.
To be a leader, you must serve those you are leading.
Jesus came to serve us.
As a servant, Jesus gave His life for us.
Laying aside my desires to put Nancy’s first just does not sound fair. I guess that from a human standpoint, it is not. Yet, was it fair for Jesus to lay down His life to serve me and you? Absolutely no, but He did.
I have come to a point in my life where this makes sense because I have seen it work. It works in my marriage. It will work in yours. Setting aside myself and my selfishness in order to serve my wife works. When I do that, three things happen. My life is better. Nancy’s life is better. Our marriage is better.
So how do I serve? I get this question a lot and so here is my list of ways that I think God leads me to serve Nancy:
I pray each day that God will help me to love her the way He wants me to love her.
I look for ways to make her day easier.
I ask her how I can help her.
I pray with and for her.
I do YouVersion reading plans with her.
I sometimes do her chores for her.
I listen to her when she is talking to me.
I compromise.
I am far from perfect in carrying these out every day but I do not think God wants me to lower the standard. I need the bar to be set high. That helps me to focus and to stay on track and to not think that I have “arrived.”
What would be on your list? What is your standard? How can you serve your spouse like God is leading you to serve them? My challenge to you this week would be to make your own list of the ways you think God would have you serve your spouse and then begin praying for God to help you do those every, single day!
