How To Survive In Marriage When It Seems You Both Are Growing In Different Directions

We got married young and now we feel like we're growing in different directions. Can our marriage survive?

Getting married young has its own unique challenges, and this is one of the biggest ones. You're both still figuring out who you are as individuals, and sometimes that growth takes you in directions that feel incompatible with each other. The person you married at 20 might have very different interests, values, or goals than they do at 30. And the same is true for you.

Here's the thing though. All couples grow and change over time, whether they married young or not. The question isn't whether you'll change, the question is whether you'll choose to grow together or grow apart. That choice is active and intentional, not something that just happens to you.

Growing in different directions doesn't automatically mean your marriage can't survive. It means you need to be more intentional about finding ways to connect and grow together even while you're also growing as individuals. Some differences are actually healthy.  They keep your marriage interesting and help you both develop into fuller versions of yourselves.

The danger comes when you start living completely separate lives with completely separate interests and no overlap. When you stop making efforts to understand and participate in each other's worlds, you become roommates instead of spouses. You need to find the balance between maintaining your individual identities and creating shared experiences that keep you connected.

Pray for God’s guidance and His wisdom. He does have answers for you. ave honest conversations about where you see yourselves going and whether those visions can coexist. What are your non-negotiables? What are areas where you can support each other's growth even if you're not growing in the exact same direction? Where do you need to find more common ground?

Steps to Grow Together:

  • Recognize that all couples change over time this isn't unique to marrying young

  • Have honest conversations about your individual growth and future visions

  • Pray for God to guide you
